Georgia Man Gets Life Plus 136 Years for Shooting Girlfriend's Cousin Dead in Front of His Children
Karlton Sirmons, 38, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus 136 additional years by Douglas County Superior Court Judge Deah Warren, Law & Crime reports. The sentence follows his conviction on malice murder and 21 other charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault, in connection with the November 2024 shooting death of 32-year-old Tavarus Joiner in Villa Rica, Georgia.
The Villa Rica Police Department announced the verdict. Sirmons' girlfriend had been staying at Joiner's home on Serenity Point Lane — roughly 30 miles west of Atlanta — to distance herself from the defendant. Joiner lived there with his longtime girlfriend and their two young children.
Shortly before 6 a.m. on Nov. 2, 2024, Sirmons kicked in the front door of the residence. When the door burst open, Joiner came to the top of the stairs to investigate. Sirmons shot him in the chest.
He then walked up the stairs and shot Joiner in the back. He shot his own girlfriend eight times and Joiner's girlfriend once in the leg. According to the police department, Sirmons also pistol-whipped a 5-year-old boy who was present in the room.
Officers arrived within minutes but initially did not know whether Sirmons remained inside. After clearing the home and beginning to treat the victims, they found Joiner already dead. The other victims were stabilized and transported to local hospitals. Surveillance footage from a nearby camera captured Sirmons leaving the home within minutes of the first 911 call, and he was pulled over closer to Atlanta in under three hours, police said. Authorities noted he stopped the attack only after running out of ammunition.
A GoFundMe set up for Joiner described the attacker as "a monster" who broke into the home "where he was sleeping with his family and killed him right in front of them." The fundraiser added: "He did not know this man and did not deserve to lose his life protecting his family. But he did, and we are devastated and angry. My son loved his two boys. They watched this killer take his life as well as shoot, beat, and break their mother's leg. She survived but has a long road to recovery."
