Bulgarian Sergeant Wounded in Atlantic City Gunfire, Attacker Killed

New Jersey prosecutors released new details and video footage from the incident in which Sergeant Christian Ivanov — a Bulgarian serving in Atlantic City police — was wounded, according to 24 Chasa.

The incident occurred on 2 June at approximately 14:55 local time. Police officers and a special SWAT team from Atlantic County attempted to execute a court-authorised search warrant at a residence on North Florida Avenue in Atlantic City.

As they approached the entrance, the officers noticed that the door was open, after which it was closed from inside. The police announced their presence and used a mechanical device to break down the door.

Shortly after entering, 52-year-old Donald Gardner, also known as Donald Caprioti, drew a firearm and opened fire on the officers. One police officer was struck in the helmet, and Sergeant Ivanov was shot in the leg. A third officer returned fire and shot the attacker, who died at the scene. A firearm was seized from the residence.

The two wounded were taken to hospital. Sergeant Ivanov was conscious and spoke with paramedics during transport. The second injured officer was later discharged.

Atlantic City police said that Ivanov is in stable condition and continues to recover, though he remains in intensive care.

Police Chief James Sarcos stated that the officers' actions were "exceptional" and contributed to saving the sergeant's life, along with the team at Atlantic Regional Medical Centre.

The police union PBA Local 24 also confirmed that Ivanov continues his recovery and thanked the public for their support.

According to investigators, attacker Gardner/Caprioti has an extensive criminal history, including violent crimes and drug offences. In 2013 he was already shot by police during a pursuit.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
