Patrick Clancy was the first witness called by prosecutors on Monday in the murder trial of his former wife, Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother charged with killing her three young children, CNN reports.
Clancy testified that his former wife had struggled following the birth of their third child. In the months before the January 24, 2023 killings, he said, she told him she was experiencing thoughts of suicide and of harming their children.
His testimony is expected to continue when court resumes on Wednesday, following opening statements from both the prosecution and the defence. Both sides warned jurors that some of the evidence presented during the trial could be difficult to hear.
Lindsay Clancy does not dispute that she killed the children. She has, however, pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder, with her attorney arguing she should not be held criminally responsible for the deaths. The defence contends she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and severe mental illness at the time of the killings.
The trial is expected to centre largely on testimony from competing psychiatric and medical experts. If convicted, Clancy faces life in prison.
