Joliet Police Place Officer and Dispatcher on Leave Over Surveillance Tech Allegations
A sworn police officer and a public safety dispatcher from the Joliet Police Department in Illinois have been placed on paid administrative leave following the discovery of alleged misuse of Flock Safety surveillance camera and licence plate reader technology, patch.com reports.
The department disclosed the action in a Facebook bulletin, stating that upon discovery of the alleged misuse, it immediately referred the matter to the City of Joliet Inspector General for investigation. The case was also forwarded to the Illinois State Police for an independent review.
"The Joliet Police Department recognises the seriousness of these allegations," the department said in the bulletin, adding that further public comment would be limited to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The department said it is reviewing and strengthening policies governing the use of Flock Safety technology, and that department-wide audits would be introduced to reinforce proper use and accountability. Officials described these steps as part of a broader commitment to "responsible policing, transparency, and maintaining the trust of the community we serve."
The identities of the two employees have not been released. The investigations by the Inspector General and the Illinois State Police remain ongoing.
