Los Angeles police shot and killed a man in Boyle Heights on Monday after he advanced on officers with a large tree trimmer, mynewsla.com reports.

Officers were dispatched at 9:55 a.m. to the 600 block of Gillette Street following a radio call about a "violent male with mental illness" armed with a metal pipe, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers located the suspect carrying a tree trimmer fitted with an approximately 12-inch serrated blade. He did not comply with orders to drop the weapon and continued moving toward the officers.

"As the officers redeployed, an officer involved shooting occurred," the LAPD stated. The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers provided medical attention to the suspect prior to paramedic arrival.

The LAPD said the investigation remains in its early stages. Authorities are still interviewing multiple witnesses, including the officers involved, and are reviewing available video footage.
