Las Vegas man shot dead after group follows robbery suspects from parking lot
News3lv.com reports that a man was shot and killed in Las Vegas after a group pursued a vehicle whose occupants had robbed a bystander of a gold chain at gunpoint in a parking lot on South Rainbow Boulevard.
The incident began around 2 a.m. on October 10 at the In-N-Out and California Fish Grill parking lots. According to an arrest report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a masked man dressed in black approached a heavy-set Hispanic man, demanded his chain and took it. A second witness told detectives he saw two armed men punching and pistol-whipping a Hispanic man in the same lot — one wielding an AR-style pistol, the other striking the victim with a handgun.
Investigators identified Raymond Duncan and Tywann Robert Hoyer-Pitts as the two men involved in the robbery. The pair then got into a silver Nissan Kicks driven by Brandon McCoy and left the scene. A light blue Acura carrying Miguel Chavarria and three other individuals followed the SUV.
At the intersection of West Rochelle Avenue and South Durango Drive, the Acura stopped as the Nissan turned onto Rochelle. Investigators say Duncan and Hoyer-Pitts, seated in the back of the Nissan, opened fire on the Acura. Police recovered 28 cartridge cases from the scene. Chavarria was shot in the mouth and died on October 17.
Duncan told detectives it was McCoy and Hoyer-Pitts who fired at the Acura, adding that he was uncertain whether the sounds he heard were gunshots or fireworks. Police, however, say witness identifications, surveillance footage and phone records contradict his account and support the allegation that he was among the shooters.
Duncan was arrested on November 4. He faces charges including open murder with a deadly weapon, three counts of attempted murder and multiple firearm-related offences. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 10. McCoy and Hoyer-Pitts are due in court on November 19.
