Lindsay Clancy Trial Collapses as Jury Fails to Reach Verdict

Google News MT reports that the criminal trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother charged with killing her three children, has ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked and could not reach a unanimous verdict.

Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse from Duxbury, Massachusetts, was accused of strangling her five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson, and seven-month-old son Callan in January 2023, before jumping from a window of the family home. She survived with serious injuries.

Her defence team argued throughout the trial that Clancy was in a state of postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, brought on in part by a cocktail of psychiatric medications prescribed to her. Prosecutors maintained she acted with intent.

The hung jury means no conviction was recorded. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, responded to the outcome, describing the prospect of a new trial as "painful."

Commentary published alongside coverage of the verdict argued that systemic failures in postpartum mental health care preceded the tragedy, framing the trial's collapse as a secondary consequence of a breakdown that occurred long before the courtroom proceedings began.

Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they intend to pursue a retrial. Clancy remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
