Brandon William Hampson, 55, the man accused of stabbing his former girlfriend to death on Long Island, was fatally shot by police officers in Erving, Massachusetts, on Wednesday night, cbsnews.com reports.

Rachel Frislid, 62, was found dead inside her home on Pearl Court in Sayville on 3 September. Suffolk County Police determined she had been stabbed to death and that there was no sign of a break-in at the property.

Investigators identified Hampson, Frislid's ex-boyfriend, as the suspect and traced him to a motel in Erving. Suffolk County detectives contacted local police and Massachusetts State Police for assistance.

Erving officers and state troopers arrived at the motel at around 9:15 p.m. and located Hampson outside. As officers moved to approach him, Hampson allegedly pulled out a sharp object. The Worcester County district attorney's office said officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused and charged at them. Officers opened fire, striking Hampson, who was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Frislid's neighbours and colleagues described her as a businesswoman, mother and grandmother who had been planning to retire and relocate to Tennessee, where her daughter and grandchild live.
