Lynchburg suspect charged over 2023 teen shooting linked to 6-year-old's death
Lynchburg police have arrested Dante Jefferson, 29, in connection with the March 2023 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Terrion Marshall, wset.com reports. Jefferson was taken into custody on Wednesday and faces charges including murder and felony homicide.
Marshall was shot on March 23, 2023, while driving along 16th Street. His vehicle struck a utility pole after the shooting, and he was pronounced dead at hospital.
Jefferson's arrest follows a lengthy investigation that uncovered a broader pattern of gang-related violence. Earlier this year, new search warrants revealed that Marshall's death was connected to a separate killing that occurred two months later — that of 6-year-old Kingston Campbell, who was shot and killed inside his home on Floyd Street while playing video games in May 2023.
According to documents obtained by investigators, Kingston's killing was carried out in retaliation for Marshall's death. Warrants allege that gang members were attempting to shoot a rival street gang member but struck the child instead. The intended target was not identified in the documents.
Dr. James Camm, with One Community, One Voice, described the arrest as bringing a conflicted sense of relief. "Happy and sad in a way, because happiness is resolving something that should have never occurred. A young man's life taken at 16 years old," Camm said. He also acknowledged the toll the case would take on Jefferson's family. "Another young life of the guy who was arrested that has gone to now him and his whole family for the rest of their lives, their gonna have to deal with this," he said.
Camm stressed that the arrest carries a broader message for the community. "Anybody may think they should take a life or do anything in our community to not be accountable when there's always opportunity for another Kingston to occur," he said.
At a press conference on July 29, 2026, Lynchburg Police Chief Ken Edwards underlined the demands of building a viable prosecution. "It's not just about identifying people and holding them responsible, but it's also building a case," Edwards said.
Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney Bethany Harrison is scheduled to hold a press conference the following morning at 11 a.m. to share further details on Jefferson's arrest.
Police confirmed the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lynchburg police at 434-455-6102, or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 888-798-5900, online, or via the P3 Tips mobile app.
