Maine Man Beats Mother with 25-Pound Weight, Kidnaps Her on 2-Hour Drive

A Maine man allegedly attacked his sleeping mother with a barbell plate, stabbed her with a butter knife, and forced her on a two-hour drive. Nathan Lagasse, 27, faces aggravated assault and kidnapping charges.

A 27-year-old man from Old Town, Maine, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly beating his mother with a 25-pound barbell plate, stabbing her with a butter knife, and forcing her into a two-hour car ride, Law & Crime reports.

Nathan Lagasse was booked at the Penobscot County Jail on Friday on charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, and obstructing justice, according to jail records reviewed by Law & Crime.

The attack occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, when the woman said she woke to find her son striking her with the weight. Lagasse also allegedly used pliers as a weapon and scratched and stabbed her with a butter knife, police said.

He then forced his mother into a vehicle for a drive lasting roughly two hours before abandoning her — taking her phone, wallet, and keys. The woman retrieved her laptop and used it to contact a friend, who called 911.

Law enforcement launched a search involving a helicopter, drones, and officers on the ground, combing nearby woods. Officers from the Orono Police Department eventually located and arrested Lagasse several miles south in Orono.

The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Lagasse appeared in court on Friday. His attorney told the court that Lagasse had accused his mother of being "psychotic" and claimed he had used the pliers in self-defense, regional ABC affiliate WMTW reported. Bail was set at $50,000, and Lagasse was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. His next court date is scheduled for December 8.

Old Town lies in central Maine, approximately 140 miles northeast of Portland.
