Man, 28, charged with shooting CMPD officer in northwest Charlotte after standoff

A 28-year-old man with an extensive criminal record was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon following a hourslong standoff, after allegedly shooting a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer in the early hours of the morning, wbtv.com reports.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 9 September, Dionte McCracking allegedly shot an officer on Enderly Road near the intersection of Tuskaseegee Road in northwest Charlotte. The incident began when someone called 911 to report a suspicious car with two occupants. Officers located the vehicle within five minutes, according to Chief Estella Patterson.

When an officer approached the car, McCracking allegedly opened fire. The officer did not return fire. As of Wednesday afternoon, the officer was in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, Chief Patterson confirmed. McCracking fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Police located McCracking later that day at a residence in southwest Charlotte. He allegedly barricaded himself inside the home, prompting a SWAT response. Negotiators were called in and a robot was deployed at a second address on Kings Ridge Drive in south Charlotte, where the SWAT team was also present.

Around 2:40 p.m., officers took McCracking into custody. Footage from a Ring doorbell camera captured him being led down the stairs following the standoff. Two other individuals were also detained for questioning in connection with the shooting.

McCracking was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a felon. Chief Patterson noted that he had an extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for first-degree arson and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A heavy police presence was also reported on Coronet Way in northwest Charlotte. Authorities confirmed one of the two additional locations was connected to the officer shooting, though it was not immediately clear whether the Coronet Way presence was directly linked.
