Man charged with murder after woman fatally shot in Southeast Memphis home

A 23-year-old Memphis man has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of a woman shot on Sunday night in Southeast Memphis, Google News MT — Crime (en) reports.

Memphis police responded at around 8 p.m. to the 5800 block of Jardin Place, near Hickory Hill Road. Officers found Nyla Howell at the scene with a gunshot wound. She was transported to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Rontavious Dillard, 23, was arrested at the scene. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents state that officers found Dillard inside the home alongside Howell. During a search of the property, investigators found blood smears trailing from the ground floor up to a second-floor walk-in attic. Inside the attic, police recovered a Mini Draco firearm concealed within a box of furnace filters. A second weapon fitted with an extended magazine was found outside, tucked into a fence.

Court records indicate Dillard changed his account to investigators three separate times. He ultimately admitted to hiding the firearms because of his prior felony convictions, according to those same documents.
