Mesa Police shot a 47-year-old man in Chandler after he appeared armed with a rifle during a domestic violence arrest. The suspect, Dwayne Varela, is in critical condition.

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that Mesa Police officers were involved in a shooting in Chandler, Arizona on 1 September, marking the second such incident for the department in under 24 hours.

Detectives travelled to a residence in the area of McQueen and Frye roads to arrest a suspect linked to a domestic violence incident that had occurred earlier in the week in Mesa.

"Detectives were in communication with the suspect inside the residence and were giving him instructions to surrender," police said in a statement. "During the communication, the suspect told detectives he was armed with a rifle."

Officers then observed the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Dwayne Varela, at the rear of the property holding a rifle, at which point an officer-involved shooting took place.

Varela subsequently refused further commands to surrender, re-entered the home and barricaded himself inside. Officers deployed several less-lethal options in an effort to take him into custody without greater harm, according to police.

Varela was transported to hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
