Two people were killed and several others injured, including three police officers, after a gunman opened fire in Minneapolis on Wednesday, TheJournal.ie reports.

Garrett Parten, a spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department, confirmed at a press conference that the suspect was also dead, though the circumstances of his death remained unclear.

One person died at the scene. Four individuals were transported to hospital, where a second victim later died from their injuries.

Three police officers were also taken to hospital. Two had been shot — one in the leg, the other requiring surgery — and both were expected to survive. A hospital spokesperson told AFP that they were in "stable condition." The nature of the third officer's injury was not disclosed.

No motive was mentioned at the press conference. Governor Tim Walz called on the public to "pray for Minnesota," while FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that his agents were responding to the incident.

City officials were expected to hold a further press conference later on Wednesday.
