Two civilians have died and three police officers were wounded after a gunman opened fire in Minneapolis, RTÉ News reports, citing local police.

The suspect also died, though the circumstances of his death remained unclear at the time of the press conference. Police spokesperson Garrett Parten confirmed that one victim died at the scene, while a second died in hospital after being among the four civilians taken there by ambulance.

Three police officers were also hospitalised. Two had been shot — one in the leg, another undergoing surgery — and both were expected to survive. A hospital spokesperson told AFP they were in "stable condition." The nature of the third officer's injury was not disclosed.

Parten said no motive had been established during the press conference. Governor Tim Walz urged the public to "pray for Minnesota," while FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed his agents were responding to the incident.

City officials were expected to hold a further press conference later in the day.
