Monterey Man Arrested for Murder in Castroville Stabbing, Victim Named

A 28-year-old Monterey man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a fatal stabbing in Castroville on Sunday. The victim, Flores Ruiz, 30, of Seaside, died after being hospitalised.

A 28-year-old Monterey man has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in Castroville early Sunday morning, kioncentralcoast.com reports.

Deputies from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office were called to the intersection of Merritt and Preston streets just after 2 a.m. Sunday, where they found a man with an apparent stab wound. The victim, Flores Ruiz, 30, of Seaside, was treated at the scene and transported to hospital, where he later died.

Detectives identified Robert Lee Jeffrey of Monterey as a suspect. Around 5 p.m. the same day, investigators located Jeffrey on Hannon Avenue in Monterey and arrested him without incident. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1.02 million.

The sheriff's office has not disclosed what is believed to have prompted the stabbing, nor whether Jeffrey and Flores Ruiz were known to each other.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed or heard anything near Merritt and Preston streets in the early hours of Sunday to come forward. Residents and businesses in the area are also being asked to review any surveillance or doorbell-camera footage that may assist the investigation.
