Frankfort mother held on murder charges after toddler's death

A 40-year-old woman has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder following the death of her 2-year-old son at a home in Frankfort, Illinois, nbcchicago.com reports.

Corie A. Walsh was found inside her residence on the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court on Tuesday afternoon, attempting to harm herself. Officers also discovered her toddler unresponsive at the scene. The child was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. Walsh was transported separately for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Walsh is currently in custody and "being held for medical treatment," according to authorities.

Three other children present in the home were unharmed, police confirmed.

The Will County Coroner's office confirmed the 2-year-old's death was "the result of an apparent homicide." A formal cause and manner of death remained "pending" as of Friday morning. Police have described the incident as a "domestic-related homicide."

Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis addressed the case in a written statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," Chelepis said. "We ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they navigate this profoundly difficult time."

Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle said he was informed of the situation directly by the police chief. "Everybody was in shock, and this is just a horrible thing in the community," he told NBC Chicago. Ogle, who noted he is the father of two daughters who recently had children, called it "very difficult for everybody here."

The mayor urged residents to reserve judgement pending the outcome of the investigation. "I don't want people to draw conclusions out of school on this," Ogle said. "Let the investigators get the information, get the facts. They'll interview neighbors, other people that are involved, and we'll get a complete picture, or as best as we can."

Frankfort is located approximately 36 miles south of Chicago.
