Dana Point homicide: suspect caught in San Francisco after victim found days after shooting

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in San Francisco in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at his home in Dana Point, Orange County, cbsnews.com reports.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said deputies responded around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Breakers Isle and Niguel Shores Drive after friends went to check on an acquaintance and found him dead. The victim, described only as a white man in his 70s, had been shot several days before his body was discovered.

Investigators used Automated License Plate Reader technology to trace the victim's car to San Francisco. The OCSD then coordinated with the San Francisco Police Department to locate the vehicle.

When officers found the car, Cordell Dionte Studley was inside. A handgun and several other items linking him to the alleged killing were recovered from the vehicle. Studley was arrested in connection with the death; his relationship with the victim has not been established.

Later on Tuesday, investigators from the Santa Monica Police Department and the OCSD confirmed to CBS LA that Studley was also the suspect taken into custody in September 2023 on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape. At that time, police said he had broken into a woman's apartment and stood beside her bed until she woke up.

No further details were immediately available.
