Nebraska Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Stabbing in Crete Home

Crete Basement Stabbing Leaves Victim Airlifted to Lincoln for Emergency Surgery

A 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a violent stabbing inside a residential basement in Crete, Nebraska, 1011now.com reports.

Emmanuel Varona Alvarez was taken into custody in the early hours of 27 August after officers from the Crete Police Department responded to a reported disturbance near East First and Grove Avenue at around 11:45 p.m. the previous night. Responding officers had been told a knife may be involved.

When they arrived, several people were gathered outside the property. Witnesses directed police to the basement, where a 29-year-old man was found on the ground with multiple stab wounds. According to an arrest affidavit, the victim had been stabbed in the neck, arms and hands.

Emergency crews transported the victim by life-flight helicopter to Lincoln for emergency surgery. His condition remained unclear as of Tuesday afternoon.

Officers described a grisly scene inside the home — a bent, bloody knife was recovered at the property, and blood had been found across several rooms. People outside the home helped police identify Alvarez as the suspect. A witness told officers he saw Alvarez flee the residence; he was located approximately two blocks away, covered in blood.

Alvarez himself sustained minor injuries to his hands. He told officers that the victim had threatened him with both a gun and a knife before his arrest, according to police.

He was formally charged several days after his arrest. In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Alvarez faces charges of first and second-degree assault, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and terroristic threats.

At an arraignment on Friday, a judge set his bond at 10% of $750,000. His next court hearing is scheduled for 18 September.
