NY State Police refer child exploitation probe against senior official to FBI
Lt. Col. Jared Duffy, chief of staff to New York State Police Superintendent Steven James, has been suspended without pay, state police announced on Sunday, wamc.org reports.
The suspension follows a search of Duffy's home in Colonie, a suburb of Albany, carried out on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation. State police subsequently asked the FBI's Albany Field Office to assume control of the case.
"The New York State Police contacted FBI Albany last week to request we adopt this investigation," an FBI spokesperson said in a statement. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we will not be commenting further."
Citing multiple police sources, the Albany Times Union had previously reported that the investigation centres on sexually explicit images of children. Duffy was also reportedly taken into custody and interviewed by state police investigators.
Duffy joined the New York State Police in 2002 and has served as James' chief of staff since October 2024, according to his LinkedIn profile. As of Sunday afternoon, no charges had been filed against him.
