Gunfight Outside Bronx Deli Leaves Career Criminal Hospitalized
A 49-year-old man with a lengthy criminal record was shot by NYPD officers Monday afternoon after pulling a gun on customers inside a Bronx deli and then opening fire on police near a neighborhood daycare, NY Post Metro reports.
Victor Soto entered Sammy Gourmet Deli on Bainbridge Avenue and East 194th Street around 3:20 p.m., drew his firearm, racked it, and pointed it at patrons — forcing them to "duck for cover," according to Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo of Patrol Borough Bronx North, who spoke at a press conference.
Soto then walked northbound before slamming the weapon into the deli's glass window, Castillo told reporters. Two uniformed officers in a patrol vehicle observed the incident and issued verbal commands for him to drop the gun.
Instead, Soto turned the firearm on the officers and exchanged gunfire with them as he continued moving up the street. One officer shot Soto, who was transported to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.
A parent identified only as Alex told NY Post Metro she witnessed the shootout firsthand while picking up her child from a daycare located directly next to the deli.
Soto has eight prior arrests on his record, including charges for assault and criminal possession of a firearm, Castillo said.
