Oakland stabbing spree kills one, injures four in 30-minute attack across East Oakland

A homeless man went on a 30-minute stabbing spree in Oakland Monday night, killing one person and injuring four others across four locations. Police arrested the suspect near 39th Avenue without further incident.

The attack began around 7:30 p.m. Monday and quickly spread across East Oakland. The lone fatality was identified as Gonzalo Lopez, 58. Two women and two other men were wounded across four separate locations during the roughly half-hour rampage.

BART officers were among the first to raise the alarm, alerting city police to a second stabbing near the Fruitvale BART station. Additional victims were subsequently discovered near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard.

Community members played a direct role in the arrest. As officers searched the area, residents directed police toward the suspect near the 1500 block of 39th Avenue, shortly before 8 p.m. Officers pursued the man on foot, ordered him to drop the knife, and took him into custody without further violence. A weapon believed to be connected to the attacks was recovered at the scene.

Authorities said the suspect, a homeless man, acted alone in all five attacks. He had not been publicly named as of Tuesday. At least two of the victims were also homeless.

Detectives are still working to establish a motive. On Tuesday, police said the victims appeared to have been chosen at random and noted that the department had not encountered a multi-victim assault of this nature in recent years.
