DA Seeks Closure of Illegal Speakeasy Linked to Officer Barry's Fatal Shooting

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced new developments Thursday in the investigation into the fatal shooting of off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry, who was killed on August 16, 2026, at an illegal speakeasy on Lancaster Avenue.

A second person was seriously injured in the same incident.

Krasner said he met directly with the Barry family to ensure they are receiving support from his office, to share information about the investigation, and to gather any details they may have. "This is still a very active and ongoing investigation and we are not ready to draw any conclusions at this time," Krasner stated. "Interviews are still being conducted and evidence is still being gathered."

The District Attorney's Office has filed a petition to close Nipsey's Hookah Lounge, the illegal speakeasy at 5016 Lancaster Ave. where the shooting occurred. The Court of Common Pleas granted the Commonwealth's petition for relief. A hearing is scheduled for September 2, 2026, at 10 a.m. in City Hall Courtroom 275.

"Our investigation shows that the establishment violated numerous laws and was cited by several neighbors as a nuisance establishment," Krasner added.

The Philadelphia Police Department is conducting a parallel investigation. Krasner said his office would take all the time necessary to complete a thorough and comprehensive review of the case.
