According to Courthouse News Service, two women have been cleared to pursue an excessive force lawsuit in Pennsylvania federal court against two Philadelphia police officers who allegedly stood by while a plainclothes officer assaulted them following the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl victory in February 2025.

A federal court ruled the claim plausible, citing the staged nature of the alleged assault. Because the attack unfolded in several distinct phases, the court found it reasonable that the two officers had sufficient time to step in and intervene — but did not.

The lawsuit targets the officers for their failure to act rather than for carrying out the assault directly. The plainclothes officer who allegedly carried out the attack is a separate figure in the case. The matter will now proceed in federal court in Pennsylvania.
