Raleigh detective dismissed after multiple assault charges in Wake Forest
A Raleigh Police Department detective was fired Tuesday morning following his arrest in an off-duty incident at the Carolina Ale House on North Park Drive in Wake Forest, abc11.com reports.
Wake Forest Police Department officers arrested detective Christopher Reed at approximately 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. The restaurant's manager had called 911 to report an intoxicated individual who had been asked to leave and had twice attempted to strike customers. The manager also reported being assaulted by Reed.
Officers located Reed, a 10-year RPD veteran, walking along Capital Boulevard and US Highway 1. He had cuts and bruises and attempted to climb a barbed wire fence while refusing to comply with officers' instructions.
EMS was subsequently called to the scene. According to the Wake Forest Police Department, Reed then assaulted an emergency medical technician.
He was charged with assault causing physical injury to emergency personnel, resisting a public officer, intoxicated and disruptive conduct, disorderly conduct, simple assault, and assault of a government official.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce confirmed Reed's termination in a statement.
"Members of the Raleigh Police Department are held to the highest standards of personal and professional conduct, both on and off duty," Boyce said. "When those standards are not met, we must respond swiftly, transparently, and appropriately to maintain the trust our community places in us."
Boyce added that Reed would be subject to the judicial process and that the department would conduct an internal affairs review into the circumstances surrounding the arrest. "The actions of one employee do not define the Raleigh Police Department or the dedicated men and women who serve this community every day," he said.
Carolina Ale House issued a statement expressing regret over the incident and confirmed cooperation with the investigation. "We are in the process of turning over camera footage," a spokesperson for the restaurant said. "The safety of our team members and guests are always of utmost importance."
Reed is scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday.
