Richmond County deputy jailer charged after food found in inmate's cell

A deputy jailer at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Richmond County has been arrested on charges of misconduct, augustachronicle.com reports.

On June 28, detention staff discovered a brown fast-food bag containing food remnants inside an inmate's cell and alerted supervisors. A review of surveillance footage allegedly showed Deputy Gwenedra Nelson carrying a brown paper bag and sliding it into the cell through the food flap.

The case was referred to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division. Investigators interviewed Nelson on July 1. She initially denied knowingly providing food to the inmate, but later acknowledged she was the person visible in the footage. Nelson subsequently stated she did not remember placing the bag in the cell and then declined to answer further questions.

Based on the findings, Nelson was arrested and charged with violation of oath of office and making false statements in a government matter.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed the case remains active and said no additional information would be released at this time.
