Two CSU students arrested in five days over explosive parts at Durward Hall
A second Colorado State University student has been arrested and charged with felony possession of explosive or incendiary device parts and reckless endangerment, cbsnews.com reports. The arrest took place at Durward Hall, the dormitory tower on the northwest corner of the Fort Collins campus — the same building where a fellow student was taken into custody just days earlier.
The two arrests occurred within a five-day span. The first came on Monday, after CSU Police received a tip that a student allegedly had napalm in his possession. Officers executed a search warrant and found a glass jar containing a sticky white substance believed to be napalm, along with aluminium powder, black iron oxide, and an empty pipe inside a 12th-floor dorm room.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by CBS Colorado, two students reported that the resident had asked if they wanted to see something cool before allegedly showing them the jar. The students told police the resident identified the substance as napalm — a highly flammable mixture of gel and fuel — and that they had previously heard him talk about blowing things up.
The suspect in the first arrest is a 19-year-old freshman. He faces charges of reckless endangerment and felony possession of an explosive or incendiary device. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is working with CSU Police to confirm whether the white substance is in fact napalm; testing remains ongoing.
Anton Trevino, a freshman living on the same floor, described the moment officers arrived. "I looked up, and eight cops came out of the stairwell, and it's kind of like a moment of like, 'Whoa, what's going on?'" Trevino said. Officers restricted movement on the floor while the investigation proceeded. CSU said the Northern Colorado Bomb Squad was consulted and determined the building did not need to be evacuated.
Trevino said some of his friends tried to use the bathroom on the other side of the floor and were asked by police to wait or go elsewhere. All substances of concern were removed from the room, and CSU stated there was no ongoing risk to campus.
The first arrest occurred just hours before an armed man was shot by campus police in a separate, unrelated incident the same Monday evening. "It's kind of crazy, especially with the things that happened later that day," Trevino said.
Colorado State University confirmed to CBS Colorado that the second student was also arrested at Durward Hall. The university said it cannot release additional details as the investigation remains active. CSU Police continue to work with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation on testing the recovered materials.
"Obviously, it's a shock to hear that somebody is doing that in the place that I live, on the same floor that I live," Trevino said. "But I'm just glad that they caught it before anything happened."
