One adult was wounded in a shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia on Wednesday morning, ABC News US reports. No children were harmed.

Jim Wood, a Waynesboro city council member whose district includes the school, confirmed the details in a phone interview. Wood described the incident as contained. "This is a one-on-one incident," he said, adding that the shooter is no longer a threat. He declined to elaborate further on the suspect's status.

The adult victim was transported to a hospital. Wood said the injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Wood was attending a nearby event Wednesday morning when the shooting occurred and went to the scene himself. He later visited a church where children were being reunited with their parents and families.

Robin Lawson, a spokeswoman for Virginia State Police, also confirmed that initial reports indicate one adult was injured and that no children were harmed. Waynesboro police had not yet released a full statement as of Wednesday afternoon, though Lawson said one was forthcoming.

Wood said he could not identify the suspect or confirm any connection between the suspect and the victim.

Video footage from local media showed multiple emergency vehicles parked outside the school. The school system stated on social media that police were "managing an emergency" Wednesday morning, and later confirmed that all "Westwood students, teachers, and staff are accounted for and are safe."

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said she was monitoring the situation. "My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school," Spanberger wrote on social media. She also thanked first responders assisting at the scene.

Waynesboro is located approximately 96 miles (155 km) northwest of Richmond.
