Son Charged with Murder After Stabbing Father 40 Times During 911 Call in Mastic, NY

Long Island Man Indicted for Father's Stabbing Death as Victim Cried Out on 911 Call

A 33-year-old Long Island man has been indicted on second-degree murder charges after allegedly stabbing his 69-year-old father approximately 40 times while the victim called 911 and pleaded for help, Law & Crime reports.

Sage Arias-Brown was taken into custody and formally indicted in the death of Edward Brown, according to a news release from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors say Arias-Brown entered Brown's studio apartment in Mastic at around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 7 and launched a violent attack that other residents could hear. "A neighbor heard a loud bang, followed by the victim screaming," the release states. Brown managed to reach a 911 dispatcher during the assault. The call captured him screaming, "I'm being murdered. What are you doing to me, Sage?"

The same neighbor reportedly observed Arias-Brown leave the apartment several minutes after the 911 call was placed. Suffolk County Police officers responding to the scene located Arias-Brown walking along a road approximately half a mile from the building and took him into custody.

Inside the apartment, officers found Brown unresponsive and covered in blood. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner's office determined he had been stabbed "approximately 40 times in the torso, chest and neck."

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney condemned the killing in a statement. "This defendant is accused of viciously taking the life of his 69-year-old father as the victim desperately called the police for help," Tierney said. "The facts in this case are heartbreaking. This indictment is an important step towards holding the defendant accountable for the brutal violence he allegedly inflicted on his own parent."

Arias-Brown appeared for arraignment on Sept. 17 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz, who ordered him held without bond. He is due back in court on Oct. 21. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in a state correctional facility.
