Two shot outside Fresno nightclub as 16-year-old opens fire during zombie crawl
Two people were left with gunshot wounds outside MIA Nightclub in Fresno's Tower District early Sunday morning, NY Post Metro reports, when a 16-year-old suspect drew a firearm during a street altercation and opened fire.
The shooting occurred at 12:18 a.m. as crowds filled the neighborhood for a "zombie crawl," a Halloween-themed bar crawl. Officers in the area heard nine shots and quickly located two victims with non-life-threatening wounds in front of the venue. Both were transported to CRMC and listed in stable condition.
A third person sustained minor injuries during the disturbance but did not require medical treatment, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.
According to investigators, a physical fight broke out between two groups of three people as they walked past each other outside the nightclub. The suspect produced a firearm and began shooting before fleeing the scene. He dropped a 9mm privately manufactured handgun at the location.
Officers tracked the juvenile to the City of Fowler later that night. Following an hour-long surround and call-out, he was taken into custody and transported to the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Center. He faces a charge of attempted murder.
MIA Nightclub responded to the incident with a public statement urging the community to "stand together, fight back against the violence and take our community back."
The shooting is the second violent incident outside the same venue in roughly two weeks. On a previous occasion, 28-year-old Tyrone Miles was fatally shot outside MIA Nightclub, with security footage capturing a group arguing before that attack. A separate shooting in the Tower District in September also left business owners expressing frustration with the ongoing violence in the area.
Lewis Everek, owner of Everek Hospitality Group, spoke to ABC 30 following Miles's death. "To see it at your front door, in a place that's beloved by the community — to see this type of violence happen, it's very disheartening and discouraging to the city as well as the Tower District," he said.
