A 17-year-old has been formally charged with murder and possession of a machine gun conversion device following two shootings in Birmingham, Alabama, that left nine people injured and one dead, wbrc.com reports.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett announced the charges at a press conference Monday night, confirming that the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office had filed them against the unnamed teen, who was found carrying a Glock conversion device when arrested.

The shootings took place shortly after 7:50 p.m. Saturday along Graymont Avenue. A second incident occurred near the intersection of 3rd Street West and Graymont Avenue. Both events followed the Magic City Classic, an annual football game held in the city.

Among those shot was 19-year-old Dre'Shawn Thomas, who died from his wounds. One other victim remains in critical condition, police said Monday.

Officers apprehended the suspect in the alley of 4th Court West after he attempted to flee on foot. Multiple firearms were recovered and secured at the scene.

Mayor Randall Woodfin had announced Sunday that the teen was being held on a 48-hour hold, adding that the 17-year-old was not the only suspect in the case.

Investigators are asking anyone with information or video footage of the incidents to contact the Birmingham Police Department at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
