Teen charged with murder in Uptown Charlotte nightclub shooting that killed bartender

Teenager identified and charged in fatal Uptown Charlotte nightclub shooting

An 18-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting outside a nightclub in Uptown Charlotte, wbtv.com reports. Tevin Stevenson was arrested on Wednesday, 11 August, by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and also faces a charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

The shooting took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday, 13 July 2025, outside the Encore Nightclub on North College Street. Six people were shot; 37-year-old Arleigh Bryant Jr. was killed. Bryant's coworkers told WBTV that he worked as a bartender at Encore and was on a break when he was shot.

Stevenson was 16 years old at the time of the incident, which is why his identity had not previously been disclosed. He turned 18 on the day of his arrest, at which point his name became part of the public record.

Surveillance footage and social media link suspect to the scene

According to a court affidavit, police obtained video surveillance footage of the events leading up to the shooting. The footage shows a fight breaking out inside Club Love, a venue located adjacent to Encore Nightclub. At approximately 1:57 a.m., co-defendant Damien Evans — who had been involved in the fight — ran out of the club towards a BMW parked in a VIP area outside. A group of people wearing white t-shirts, including Stevenson, were standing near the vehicle.

Evans allegedly attempted to re-enter the nightclub after circling the BMW with the group but was denied entry. The affidavit states that Stevenson then moved to the driver's side of the BMW. As the club was emptying out, Stevenson allegedly fired an AR-style pistol from the sidewalk in the direction of Bryant and East 7th Street.

Evans and Stevenson then ran toward 6th Street. Evans was allegedly holding the firearm at that point and subsequently threw it under a parked Cadillac CTS. Officers who responded to the scene were, according to police, "unaware of their involvement and turned their focus to assisting injured individuals." Stevenson passed officers and was captured on body-worn camera footage.

The affidavit describes Stevenson wearing a white "A Bathing Ape" t-shirt, yellow and black shoes, and black pants, with a silver watch on his left wrist. Police subsequently located his Instagram account, which contained multiple photographs of him in the same clothing. Images on the account also allegedly showed the AR-style pistol — described as having a chrome barrel with a black and blue body. Investigators said his clothing and hair matched the body-worn camera footage.

Following the shooting, police also recovered a black firearm rail and multiple discharged cartridge casings at the scene.

Two other suspects previously charged

CMPD had already charged two other men in connection with the shooting on Monday, 14 July 2025. Shawn Cannon faces charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, fleeing or eluding arrest, and accessory after the fact of a felony. The affidavit identifies Cannon as the driver of the BMW that left the scene after the shooting, with Stevenson in the rear seat and Evans in the front passenger seat.

Damien Evans was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm.
