A Texas appeals court has conditionally granted mandamus relief to the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a conservative Christian organization linked to the Duggar family, Courthouse News Service reports.

The ruling requires the trial court in Texarkana to vacate an order that had compelled IBLP to respond to interrogatories and requests for production of documents. The underlying lawsuit was filed by two sisters who allege that the teachings of IBLP and its founder, Bill Gothard, created conditions that enabled their father and older brother to sexually abuse them.

The appeals court found that the trial court abused its discretion by failing to conduct "a proper analysis regarding the breadth of the discovery sought" — a standard required before compelling an organization to comply with such requests.

The mandamus relief is conditional, meaning the trial court must now revisit the discovery order and apply the appropriate legal framework before any new ruling can take effect. The decision does not resolve the underlying abuse claims against IBLP or Gothard, but limits the scope of information the plaintiffs can compel the organization to produce at this stage of litigation.
