Thomas Markle Sr., 82, arrested on child sex abuse material charges after FBI storage unit raids
Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on Friday on a federal child pornography charge, latimes.com reports. Federal authorities had raided two storage units he allegedly rents in the Los Angeles area of California, seizing dozens of items including film negatives later converted into digital images depicting suspected child sex abuse material.
Markle, 82 and a former Hollywood lighting director, is charged in the Central District of California with possession of child pornography. According to the criminal complaint, explicit photographs were found showing an adult man identified as Markle alongside minors.
Two images depict an adult man with a nude prepubescent girl. A third image shows a nude prepubescent girl in a room that appears to be located in the Philippines. A witness who has known Markle since the 1970s identified him as the man in at least two of those photographs, according to the complaint.
The FBI compared those images to further materials recovered from the storage units and stated that some appeared to depict Markle "along with children in various stages of undress."
Released on personal recognizance, ordered into home detention
Markle appeared in court Friday afternoon. A magistrate judge ordered him released on personal recognizance but imposed home detention and electronic monitoring. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison. His federal public defender did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
"These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr. Markle to the fullest extent of federal law," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement.
Authorities seized approximately 27 items from the first storage unit, including slides, film negatives and books. After converting some negatives into colour digital photographs, agents discovered suspected child pornography. A further 51 items were seized from the second unit, also including materials containing suspected child abuse imagery. Markle has reportedly rented both units since 2008, with payments made automatically as recently as last month.
Philippine investigation preceded the US charges
The California charges follow a parallel investigation by authorities in the Philippines, which was initiated after Markle's son, Thomas Markle Jr., reported discovering child pornography images inside four large boxes at his father's home in Cebu, Philippines.
Philippine authorities confirmed that the FBI and US federal prosecutors had been conducting their own separate investigation. At a press conference in Manila, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla described the images recovered in the Philippines — more than 7,000 photographs and a video, all depicting underage girls and boys — as "deplorable" and "deeply, deeply disturbing."
Philippine authorities on Thursday named Thomas Markle Jr. as a person of interest in their own investigation, related to digital devices allegedly belonging to his father.
The FBI began receiving reports from witnesses about Markle Sr. last month, according to the complaint. One witness, identified only as Witness 1, had signed an affidavit regarding the discovery of suspected child pornography among Markle Sr.'s possessions in the Philippines. Witnesses subsequently disclosed the existence of the two California storage units.
Markle Sr. had previously denied all allegations
Markle Sr. had previously denied the accusations. In remarks to the Daily Mail, he described himself as "shocked" and "hurt" by his son's claims. "It's the worst thing anyone could accuse me of," he said. "I have no idea why Tom is trying to destroy me with these lies."
Markle Sr. reportedly left the Philippines earlier this year to receive medical care in the United States following an emergency leg amputation. He was subsequently asked to leave a rehabilitation facility in Florida after news of the Philippine investigation became public, and was moved to a nursing home, according to a report by The Sun.
Meghan says she first learned of allegations in 2019
In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, Meghan Markle said she was "deeply distressed" by developments in the case. The duchess stated she first became aware of "troubling and disturbing allegations" against her father in 2019, after a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection that was later shared with her.
"Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children," she said.
Meghan's relationship with her father has attracted sustained media attention since 2018, when she married Prince Harry. Thomas Markle Sr. did not attend the wedding. In her statement, the duchess addressed years of public speculation about the estrangement.
"I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications' distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them."
