Two US cities struck by mass shootings overnight, leaving three dead and 18 injured

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that mass shootings in Chicago and Trenton, New Jersey, left three people dead and 18 wounded overnight, according to statements from local authorities.

Gunfire broke out at approximately 11:37 p.m. local time inside Washington Park in Chicago's Hyde Park neighbourhood on the South Side, the Chicago Police Department said. Officers were already on the scene attempting to disperse a large gathering when shots were fired.

A 35-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to the body and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Nine additional victims — five men and four women, aged between 23 and 45 — were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Police said more than one gunman may have opened fire. No arrests were immediately announced and a motive remains under investigation. No officers were reported injured.

Witness Terry Jones, who said he was attending a picnic in the park at the time, described a chaotic scene. "I thought it was fireworks, but it wasn't fireworks," Jones told ABC Chicago station WLS, adding that people ran and dove for cover as the shooting unfolded.

Nearly 800 miles away, officers in Trenton were responding to a separate mass shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 12:25 a.m. ET on Locust Street in the Greenwood & Hamilton neighbourhood, south of downtown Trenton, after multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots in the area.

At least two people were killed and nine others were injured in the Trenton shooting, the city's police department said in a statement. The nine surviving victims were being treated at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, though information on their conditions was not released.

No arrests were reported in Trenton either. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force has taken over the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, officials confirmed.
