Stabbing and shooting in Times Square leaves two dead

A woman armed with two knives stabbed and killed one person and injured a second in New York's Times Square on Monday, before officers shot and killed her, the Jamaica Observer reports.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the deaths at a press conference, adding that the second stabbing victim was in stable condition at a hospital.

One witness told local outlet PIX11 that the suspect was tased by police after refusing to stop, then rushed at officers. "They shot her twice," the unnamed witness said.

The New York Police Department described the incident as a "confirmed officer-involved shooting" and said the investigation remained active. A department spokeswoman told AFP at the time: "Right now, it's still an active and ongoing investigation."

An AFP journalist at the scene observed a large emergency services presence and officials examining a bloodied area of the square, one of the city's busiest tourist destinations.

Police do not believe the stabbing was terror-related.
