The murder of Tupac Shakur, shot dead in Las Vegas in 1996, was officially closed after Las Vegas police charged a suspect decades after the killing. Duane "Keffe D" Davis was indicted in 2023 in connection with the shooting, bringing a formal legal conclusion to one half of a long-running double mystery.

The killing of Christopher Wallace — known as Biggie Smalls or The Notorious B.I.G. — shot dead in Los Angeles in 1997, remains an open investigation. No charges have been brought in that case.

The Los Angeles Police Department has faced long-standing criticism over the handling of the Wallace investigation, including allegations of internal obstruction that have never been fully resolved.
