SWAT standoff on Gardenia Avenue ends with two men dead

Two men were found dead inside a Long Beach residence early Saturday after a suspect fired at police officers, prompting a SWAT response, latimes.com reports.

The incident began along the 3700 block of Gardenia Avenue, where officers responded to a report of two shots fired at a nearby home. Upon arrival, police made contact with an adult male inside the property who threatened to shoot them.

Officers withdrew and called for backup. Before SWAT arrived, the suspect opened fire on police. One officer also discharged their weapon. No officers were injured.

The unidentified man remained barricaded inside the home as the standoff unfolded. Long Beach Police's SWAT team was called in and eventually forced entry into the residence.

Inside, officers found two men dead, both with gunshot wounds to the upper body. Their identities have not been released by authorities. Several firearms and additional evidence were recovered from the scene.

Long Beach Police did not respond to questions about whether officers fired their weapons during the entry itself.

"At this time, the circumstances for each decedent's death remain under investigation," police said in a statement.

Officers were equipped with body-worn cameras throughout the incident. "LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible," police said.
