Two dead after vehicle ploughs into soccer match at Wichita sports complex

A vehicle drove onto a soccer field during an active match at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing two people — including a child — and injuring several others, according to cnn.com.

Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department confirmed that the driver is in custody and stated there is "no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver." Two juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, which occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. local time.

The victims, one adult and one child, have not yet been identified. Officials said they are working to notify the families of those killed before releasing further details, including ages.

Witnesses told CNN affiliate KWCH that a large number of families and children were present on the field when the incident took place. One attendee described seeing a black pickup truck jump the curb and drive directly onto the playing surface. Two other witnesses reported hearing a loud noise at the moment of impact.

The sports complex, which features a fenced field with a concrete runway connecting to a parking lot, drew a heavy law enforcement response. It remains unclear how the vehicle breached the gate or at what speed it was travelling, Moses said.

It is also not yet known which soccer clubs were competing on the field at the time.

In the wake of the incident, the Kansas State High School Activities Association announced the suspension of games at a nearby flag football state championship being held on an adjacent field at the Stryker Complex.

Police said a further news conference was expected Saturday evening to provide additional information.

The vehicle remained at the scene following the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
