Suspect escapes with handcuff on wrist after striking officers with vehicle
Two Philadelphia police officers sustained injuries on Saturday evening after a suspect with outstanding warrants broke free during an attempted arrest and fled the scene in his vehicle, 6abc.com reports.
The incident began at approximately 4:55 p.m. when an officer from the city's 24th District pulled over a vehicle for traffic violations in North Philadelphia. After running the vehicle's information, officers discovered the driver was wanted on outstanding warrants, leading to what police classified as a felony vehicle stop. A lieutenant and additional officers responded to assist.
Officers made contact with the driver and had secured one handcuff on his wrist when he broke free and climbed back into the vehicle. As officers moved to prevent him from leaving, the suspect accelerated away. One officer was struck by the vehicle and thrown to the ground; the lieutenant was also thrown onto the roadway during the confrontation.
Both officers suffered road burns and abrasions, according to Inspector D.F. Pace. Pace said neither appeared to have sustained broken bones, and both were expected to be treated and released.
The suspect fled before the arrest could be completed — still wearing the handcuff on one wrist, though police said it remains unclear whether it remains on him.
Investigators have identified the suspect but are withholding his name while the investigation remains active.
