Infant killed in Jackson, NJ parking lot; two undocumented women face charges
An unlicensed Guatemalan national killed a nine-month-old boy after crashing into his family in a New Jersey grocery store parking lot on Aug. 28, with ICE now seeking to deport both her and the car's owner, NY Post Metro reports.
María Cobon-Guzmán, 20, of Trenton, was charged Tuesday with five counts including manslaughter following the death of Yitzchok Rosenberg, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Investigators said she has never held a driver's license.
Cobon-Guzmán was behind the wheel of a Ford Fusion when she struck Golda Chana, who was pushing Yitzchok in a stroller, and Chana's 5-year-old daughter. All three were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where the infant died.
Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, 22, a Mexican national living in Toms River, was charged with knowingly creating a substantial risk of death for allowing Cobon-Guzmán to drive the vehicle.
Ocean County Jail records show U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers filed against both women. Judge Kimarie Rahill denied bail to each.
A Department of Homeland Security official told Fox News Digital that both women entered the country illegally during the Biden administration. Lazaro-Flores crossed the U.S.-Mexico border on five separate occasions in October 2023 and was removed each time. Cobon-Guzmán entered once and was released; an immigration judge approved a deportation order against her on July 31.
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) told Fox News Digital he has called for the removal of New Jersey's sanctuary status, which currently restricts state and local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Smith noted that Lazaro-Flores was able to obtain a driver's license despite being in the country illegally.
