Utah: Trial begins for Charlie Kirk murder — Widow leaves before violent videos
The first major court proceeding for the murder of Charlie Kirk began in Utah, with the family of the 31-year-old conservative commentator and his wife Erika coming face-to-face with the man accused of killing him for the first time.
Kirk, founder of the youth conservative organization Turning Point USA and close ally of Donald Trump, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025 by 23-year-old Tyler Robinson while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Robinson, who surrendered to authorities one day after the shooting, faces charges of premeditated murder, illegal use of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.
Prosecutors are attempting to convince the judge that there is sufficient evidence to proceed to a full trial, in which they have made clear they will seek the death penalty. The 23-year-old has not yet entered a plea.
The accused murderer, Tyler Robinson, smiled at various moments during the preliminary hearing while speaking with one of his attorneys. If convicted, he faces the possibility of the death penalty.
In the courtroom were Kirk's widow Erika, his parents, and Donald Trump Jr., son of the American president and friend of the victim.
The family stated in a press release before the proceeding that every court process serves as "a painful reminder" of their loss.
Erika Kirk appeared emotional and left the courtroom shortly before prosecutors played three videos capturing the moment her 31-year-old husband was fatally shot in the neck.
She had previously stated publicly that she forgives the man accused of her husband's murder. "My husband wanted to save young men, like the one who took his life. I forgive him, because that is what Christ did. That is what Charlie would have done," she had said at his memorial.
