Santa Rosa woman charged with attempted kidnapping after confronting mother and infant
A woman has been arrested in Santa Rosa on suspicion of attempted child abduction after allegedly trying to seize a baby from a stroller on a busy street, nbcbayarea.com reports.
The incident occurred on Monday shortly after 8 a.m. in the 700 block of Seventh Street, where a mother was walking with her toddler and a 10-month-old infant. An unknown woman approached the group aggressively, blocking them from leaving the area, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The suspect demanded access to the baby and reached into the stroller, grabbing at the child. She then pulled on the stroller while continuing to make statements about taking the baby.
The mother called for help, and a passing motorist stopped to assist. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived. Neither child sustained physical injuries.
On Tuesday, detectives identified a person of interest from footage recorded by a nearby security camera. At approximately 1:10 p.m., an officer spotted a woman matching the image near Second and D streets and made the arrest.
The woman was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, child endangerment, and violating the conditions of her pretrial release.
Police also believe the same suspect had earlier approached a woman walking her dog on Slater Street, allegedly challenging her without provocation and then following her.
