Woman Attacks 23-Year-Old Jewish Nurse on New York Subway in Antisemitic Assault

A violent antisemitic attack occurred on a New York City subway train on the afternoon of Sunday, May 31, when a woman targeted a 23-year-old Jewish passenger. The incident took place on a southbound C train in Manhattan.

According to Philenews, police identified the suspect as Diana Smith, a woman from the Bronx. She boarded the train and began shouting offensive remarks against Jewish people, including the claim that "Jews eat babies." She initially directed her conspiracy-laden comments at other passengers.

Minutes later, the suspect turned her attention to the victim, a 23-year-old nurse, targeting her because of her Jewish identity. Smith allegedly grabbed the young woman by the throat, threw her to the floor, and pulled her hair with such force that a clump was torn out.

Video footage recorded by the victim and published by the New York Post captured part of the episode, including the suspect yelling extremist antisemitic phrases. The assault ended when the train reached Canal Street station. The victim exited the car seeking police officers, while another passenger activated the emergency brake system, leading to the suspect's arrest.

The 23-year-old victim stated that she suffered bruising and expressed frustration that numerous fellow passengers witnessed the attack without substantially intervening.

The incident occurred on the same day as the annual Israel parade in Manhattan. It comes amid a documented rise in antisemitic incidents across the United States following the outbreak of the Gaza war after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
