Dawn Light, 56, a registered nurse with no prior criminal record, is alleged to have sat in a restricted area in her parked car on Tuesday and photographed members of the jury as they left the building. She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on Wednesday, with her attorney Jennifer White describing the incident as a complete misunderstanding.
"This is a complete misunderstanding, Your Honour. My client was trying to get a picture of Ms Clancy," White told the court.
Prosecutors disputed that account. When they examined the deleted folder on Light's phone, they said they found images of jurors exiting the courthouse. Light was subsequently taken into custody. Authorities added that when first approached, she told officers she was not recording anything and said she was waiting to see Clancy.
Massachusetts prosecutors argued that Light's conduct placed the sanctity of the judicial system at risk. They requested a $50,000 (£37,000) cash bail, a figure the presiding judge declined to grant. Light was instead ordered to stay away from the courthouse grounds, to have no contact with anyone associated with the Clancy trial, and not to distribute or reproduce any photographs that may have been preserved on iCloud.
Judge William Sullivan, who is overseeing the Clancy case, has an existing order explicitly prohibiting the photographing or filming of jurors. Prosecutors described the courthouse as having taken extensive measures to protect the integrity of the proceedings in the coastal Massachusetts town.
After the arraignment, Light was met by a large group of reporters outside the court. When one asked why she had wanted to see Lindsay Clancy, she replied: "Why not?"
Lindsay Clancy, 36, is charged with the murders of her three children. The livestreamed trial has drawn national and international media attention, prompting strong and often sharply divided reactions from the public. More than 200 journalists are covering the case, and a fluctuating group of women supporters has maintained a presence outside the courthouse for several weeks.
The Plymouth jury has been deliberating since Thursday over whether Clancy bears criminal responsibility for her children's deaths. The case has also generated extensive debate on social media around mental health, postpartum psychosis, and the boundaries of criminal culpability. Jurors are barred from watching or reading media coverage and are required to reach their verdict solely on the evidence and testimony presented in court.
