Three United Rentals Workers Shot in Manassas Workplace Attack

Three men were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning after a coworker opened fire at a United Rentals equipment facility in Manassas, Virginia, cbs12.com reports.

Officers from the Manassas City Police Department responded around 7 a.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter at 9415 Wellington Road. All three victims were employees of United Rentals found at the scene.

Police Chief Doug Keen identified the alleged gunman as Marvin Grant, 37, also a United Rentals employee. Investigators believe Grant left Northern Virginia after the shooting and issued a statewide "be on the lookout" alert. He is believed to be driving a gray Toyota Camry or Toyota Corolla bearing temporary North Carolina registration tags and may still be armed with a handgun, which was not recovered at the scene. Members of the public are urged not to approach Grant or the vehicle and to call 911 immediately if either is spotted.

Two of the victims were located in the facility's garage or bay area; a third came from an office area and entered the garage before being shot. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from inside the building.

Chief Keen said the incident was initially handled as an active shooter call but is now being treated as a case of workplace violence. "Our working theory is that there was some kind of altercation that led to this," he said. Detectives continue to investigate the events leading up to the shooting.

Several nearby schools were placed on lockdown as officers responded to the scene. Those measures have since been lifted, and Jennie Dean Elementary School has returned to normal operations, police said. Residents in the surrounding area were advised to stay indoors, secure their doors, and avoid the scene.

United Rentals issued a statement acknowledging the incident: "United Rentals is aware of an incident that occurred today at our Manassas, Virginia branch. The safety and well-being of our employees and the community are our top priority. We are working closely with law enforcement and providing support to affected team members."
