Man arrested after vehicles set ablaze at Liberal MP Zahid's Scarborough home

Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports that Toronto police have charged a 24-year-old man in connection with an arson attack that destroyed vehicles in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid's home last month.

Roshvin Crofton was arrested Sunday and faces five charges: arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material, and failure to comply with a probation order, police announced in a news release Friday.

According to police, an unknown suspect approached the vehicles in Zahid's driveway early on Aug. 27, poured an accelerant over them and ignited two cars before fleeing the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the spreading flames.

A 2025 Hyundai Sonata, believed to have been used in connection with the incident, was seized by investigators. Police are appealing for information on the vehicle's whereabouts in the days leading up to the alleged arson.

Officers say they are also searching for a second suspect in the case.

Zahid, who represents the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East and has held the seat since 2015, welcomed news of the arrest in a statement released Friday. "I welcome word of an arrest and charges related to the arson incident outside my home on August 27th, and news the police are seeking an additional suspect in relation to this case," she said.

She added that a motive has not yet been established. "As the investigation is ongoing, we still do not have information with regards to a motive for this incident."

Zahid currently chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association. The attack drew condemnation from multiple politicians, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.
