Barrie man arrested after child exploitation investigation; three die in separate Toronto-area crashes
A 24-year-old Barrie man has been arrested and charged following a four-month child exploitation investigation, Toronto Sun Crime reports, in one of three serious incidents to emerge from the Greater Toronto Area over the weekend.
Child exploitation probe — Barrie
Barrie Police said the investigation was launched after its Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit received a tip from the National Centre of Missing and Exploited Children regarding the upload of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
In June, ICE officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the east end of Barrie, but the suspect was not present at the time. A second search warrant was obtained on July 30 for an address in the city's west end, where the accused was subsequently located.
Officers seized an electronic mobile device for forensic analysis. Investigators said the examination of that device led to the discovery of images and videos of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
The man was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
Elderly pedestrian struck in Scarborough dies of injuries
An 82-year-old woman died Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle earlier that morning in Scarborough, Toronto Police said.
Officers responded at approximately 6:10 a.m. to a call at the intersection of Bridletowne Circle and Finch Ave. E. A 49-year-old woman was driving a white Toyota RAV4 southbound on Bridletowne Circle and turning westbound onto Finch Ave. E. when the vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was crossing from the north-west corner of the intersection in an undetermined direction.
The pedestrian was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed Saturday morning that she had died of her injuries the previous evening.
The incident has been classified as a fatal collision. Traffic Services is continuing its investigation, and police are asking local residents, business owners, or drivers with security or dash camera footage of the area to contact investigators at 416-808-1900.
Two males dead after single-vehicle crash in North York
Two men were killed early Saturday morning when a vehicle struck a traffic light pole in North York, Toronto Police said in a social media update.
Reports were called in at approximately 4:40 a.m. for a single-vehicle collision at Finch Ave. W. and Romfield Lane, one block west of Keele St. The vehicle struck the pole with enough force to knock it completely down; the airbags deployed on impact.
Emergency services pronounced both males dead shortly after arriving at the scene. The intersection was closed for the investigation and police asked the public to avoid the area.
