A man posing as a repairman stole over $5,000 in jewelry from an 80-year-old North York woman. Separately, a Guelph man was arrested at a Cambridge mall after a BB gun was mistaken for a handgun.

Fake repairman targets North York senior; BB gun incident at Cambridge mall

Toronto Police are seeking tips to identify a male suspect who posed as a maintenance worker and stole more than $5,000 worth of jewelry from an 80-year-old woman's apartment, Toronto Sun Crime reports.

The incident occurred on Aug. 26 at approximately 4:15 p.m. at a residential building in the Jane St. and Sheppard Ave. W. area of North York. The suspect told the woman he was there to repair her unit; she let him in, and he allegedly took the jewelry before leaving.

Police described the suspect as approximately 30 years old with a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black pants, white and black shoes, and eyeglasses. Investigators warned that additional victims may exist.

In a separate incident, a 44-year-old Guelph man faces weapon and mischief charges after Waterloo Regional Police responded to reports of a firearm at a Cambridge shopping mall last week.

Officers were called to a mall on Hespeler Rd. on Friday at about 7:50 p.m. following reports of a man in possession of what was believed to be a handgun. When police arrived, they located the man outside the mall and placed him under arrest. A BB gun was seized at the scene.

No physical injuries were reported. The man, whose name has not been released, was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing a peace officer, and mischief under $5,000. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
