Scammers Impersonate Bank Officials in Kingston Fraud Alert

Kingston Police have issued a public warning about an ongoing scam in which fraudsters pose as bank investigators, fraud department staff, or financial institution security personnel, wmur.com reports.

According to police, victims are typically told that suspicious activity has been detected on their accounts. They are then directed to assist with a fabricated investigation by handing over personal information, online banking credentials, or verification codes.

In some cases, victims are persuaded to surrender their bank cards, buy gift cards, withdraw and mail cash, purchase gold or other precious metals, send e-transfers, or deposit funds into cryptocurrency ATMs.

Kingston Police have reminded residents that no legitimate financial institution will ever ask customers to provide passwords or verification codes, give up bank cards, purchase gift cards or gold, mail cash, send e-transfers, or deposit money into a Bitcoin ATM as part of any investigation.

Anyone in the Kingston area who believes they have been targeted by this type of scam is encouraged to report it to Kingston Police. Reports can be submitted online at www.kingstonpolice.ca or by calling 613-549-4660, ext. 0.
